Richard Calvert

Richard is Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Sheffield Hallam University, where his role includes overall responsibility for the University's professional services, as well as for strategy and organisational change. He also leads the UK Civic University Network.
Richard has an extensive background in leading professional, corporate and policy functions in central government. Before joining Sheffield Hallam in 2016, he was a Director General at the Department for Education. He was previously Director General for Finance and Corporate Performance at the Department for International Development, where he supported the delivery of DFID's programmes, and also led the Department's work on climate change and on international education.
Much of Richard’s earlier career was at DFID and its predecessors. He also worked at the UK Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels; and as Private Secretary to a number of government ministers.
Richard has held several non-executive roles, including as a Governor at the University of Hertfordshire and an Independent Advisor to the National Assembly for Wales.
He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
