The Scottish Government's Humanitarian Emergency Fund (HEF) has given money to Christian Aid for the second time this year. This funding will help people escaping the violence in Sudan.

This recent announcement, confirmed this week, will let our partner Coalition for Humanity give emergency cash grants. Over 5,000 people in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, South Sudan, will receive this help. They can use the money to buy food, medicine, and other essentials. Many are refugees or returnees seeking safety, often leaving behind everything they own.

According to the latest figures millions of people have left Sudan since the conflict began in April 2023, with over 870,000 crossing the border into South Sudan:

We’re grateful that the Scottish Government’s Humanitarian Emergency Fund is able to support our work in South Sudan, where displacement camps continue to grow due to the constant stream of people fleeing violence in Sudan. This funding will allow our local partner to distribute cash grants – this means people, who’ve often arrived with only the clothes they’re wearing, can buy essentials like food or medicines. Importantly, this provides a ray of hope during a bleak time. The project will also include activities to reduce gender-based violence, allowing women and girls to feel safer.

This is the second time that Christian Aid has received funding from the Scottish Government for urgent humanitarian work in South Sudan.

Refugees in the Wedweil camp near Arweil were supported with cash grants in March 2024. Shede (pictured above) was one of those for whom the funding made a huge difference, allowing her to buy food for her family in the local markets. She now has a temporary home in the camp with her youngest daughter and her granddaughter.

Shede’s story is available to read in our Christmas Appeal.
