Living a life of faith means more than just belief—it calls us to act with kindness and generosity towards those around us. The Bible reminds us that compassion is not only about feeling sympathy, but about taking action when others are in need.

At Christian Aid, we’re committed to putting our values into practice, working alongside communities to bring hope and support where it’s needed most. Here are seven Bible verses that inspire us to lead lives of compassion and service.

Fundraise with us this Christian Aid Week

After 80 years of fighting poverty and injustice, we know that real change happens when we come together. Fundraise with us this Christian Aid Week and help make a lasting difference.

What the Bible says about compassion and helping others:

  1. Galatians 6:9 - 'So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.'

  2. Matthew 25:35 - 'For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.'

  3. Isaiah 58:10 - '...If you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday.'

  4. Proverbs 19:17 - 'Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full.'

  5. Hebrews 13:16 - 'Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.'

  6. Proverbs 3:27 - 'Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.'

  7. Ephesians 2:10 - 'For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.'

Making compassion part of our daily lives

Compassion is more than an occasional act—it’s a way of life that requires patience, understanding and selflessness. As we reflect on these Bible verses, let us ask God for the wisdom and strength to put love into action every day.

Whether through a kind word, a helping hand or a moment of generosity, even the smallest act can bring light into someone's life.

A prayer for a compassionate heart

Loving Father,

Thank You for Your endless love and mercy.

Help us to see the world as You do,

with hearts that are open and hands ready to serve.

May we follow the example of the Lord Jesus Christ,

showing kindness to those who are struggling

and standing up for those who are oppressed.

Let our lives be a reflection of the words of the Lord,

so that through us, others may come to know Your love.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen

Aurelia's story

Let compassion lead the way this Christian Aid Week

In Guatemala, gruelling heatwaves and extreme weather are destroying Aurelia’s farm. She worries deeply about how much harvest the family will have to eat and sell.

Your support is urgently needed to ensure we can be there for Indigenous families who are bearing the full force of the climate crisis.

Together, we can be more like Aurelia, and put the unstoppable power of hope into action, because a brighter, fairer future is possible.
