Fire
The burning bush
Something to think about
Each year Christian Aid joins with other organisations to mark the Season of Creation, a time when church communities re-commit to caring for God's creation. In 2022 the symbol of the Season of Creation was the Burning Bush. As a result of climate change the world is seeing an increasing number of destructive wildfires, threatening homes and habitats. In the Burning Bush we have a symbol of a fire that does not consume or destroy but reveals the powerful and liberating presence of God. When God speaks to Moses from the Burning Bush it is to proclaim that God has heard the cries of those who suffer and will act to deliver them from oppression.
God chooses Moses to act as a leader in this movement of liberation. God's voice calls out his name and Moses answers 'Here I am'. Moses is sceptical - how could he make a difference? He is no-one. He has been judged a criminal and has had to flee his home. Not to mention that he has problems speaking clearly in public. 'I will be with you,' God answers.
Is God calling you to join what seems like mission impossible? If you feel disempowered or voiceless, perhaps the story of Moses' call can help. By the power of God even the most destructive forces can be overcome. The flames that devastate the natural world can be tackled with a fire of faith, hope and love that burns within us. But only if we respond to God's call. Only if we can say 'Here I am'.
