Message from Lord Wallace, the Moderator of the Church of Scotland

“This Christmas, the people of Afghanistan are in severe need.

Droughts, economic collapse and a change in government have resulted in a humanitarian crisis with more than half the population facing food insecurity and a million children at risk of dying from malnutrition.

The Disaster Emergency Committee, a group of charities including Christian Aid, has launched an appeal to ensure food, medicine and hygiene supplies reach vulnerable families.

Recognising the urgency of the situation, the UK Government will match the first £10 million donated to the appeal.

I encourage Christians to express God’s love for all His people by joining together to support the Afghanistan Appeal.”

Church of Scotland Moderator

This Christmas, the people of Afghanistan are in severe need. I encourage Christians to express God’s love for all His people by joining together to support the Afghanistan Appeal.

Let us pray

Lord Jesus, Lord of all the world, we bring to You our prayers for our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan.

May we, in the comfort of our homes, become ever more aware of the suffering and anxiety of those who from their homes see basic services on the point of collapse. May we be aware of those who are suffering from multiple causes of disease; of children and adults who are malnourished and facing acute food shortages.

Lord Jesus, born a baby in Bethlehem, You came to give us life, and life in all its fullness.

May our eyes be open to the plight of those in Afghanistan for whom such fullness must feel like a distant prospect. And may our hearts be filled with compassion, so that we may be moved to support the efforts of those who strive to deliver the very basics of life itself.

We pray for courage, wisdom and generosity among those in Afghanistan and the wider international community who seek to respond to need and work to bring much-needed relief and assistance.

Lord Jesus, as an infant, You and your family had to flee from the threat of oppression and death.

We ask that You will bring strength and safety to those who no longer feel it is secure to stay in their Afghan homeland. May they experience love and understanding from individuals, institutions and governments on their refugee journey.

And may they find a place to call home.

Mercifully hear us, Lord and Giver of life.

Amen
