What is the DEC?

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is a coalition of 15 leading UK charities that unite to respond to major global crises. Founded in 1963 with Christian Aid as one of its key creators, the DEC ensures that life-saving aid reaches the people who need it most.

By combining expertise and resources, the DEC enables its member organisations to provide fast and effective responses to emergencies like natural disasters, wars and and other crises. Together we are able to deliver critical support, rebuild lives and help communities recover.

Christian Aid is proud to have helped establish the DEC and continues to play a crucial role in its mission to respond to global emergencies.

How Christian Aid works with the DEC

As a founding member, Christian Aid brings decades of experience and local knowledge to DEC responses. Our role is to ensure that funding is used effectively to provide:

  • Immediate relief including food, water and medical supplies
  • Emergency shelter for displaced families
  • Long-term recovery helping communities rebuild their lives

Whenever the DEC launches an appeal, we're on the ground working with trusted partners to deliver essential aid to those in desperate need.

Christian Aid and the history of the DEC

Christian Aid has been at the heart of the DEC since its inception. Together with other member charities we’ve raised billions of pounds for life-saving aid. Over the decades the DEC has responded to countless global crises including:

  • The Ethiopian famine in the 1980s
  • The devastating Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004
  • The more recent Türkiye-Syria earthquake and the conflict in Ukraine

Our shared mission is to deliver aid efficiently and effectively ensuring donations reach the people who need them most.

Current DEC emergencies

Christian Aid is actively working as part of the DEC to respond to today’s most urgent crises:

  • Gaza Crisis Appeal: Delivering food, water and medical care to families caught in the devastating conflict in Gaza.
  • Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal: Providing food, water and psychological support for families displaced by conflict.

Past DEC appeals we’ve supported

From floods to pandemics, Christian Aid has played a critical role in past DEC responses. Some highlights include:

  • The Pakistan Floods Appeal where we supported families with food, water and shelter after devastating floods in 2022.
  • The COVID-19 Appeal providing medical aid and resources to vulnerable communities worldwide.
