Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin America and one of the places most affected by climate change in the world. Yet 80% of the population depend on agriculture for survival.

Adapta Nicaragua aims to build the resilience of 1,000 low-income producers of cocoa and honey.

The project is being implemented by Christian Aid, our partner Centro Humboldt and private sector partner Ingemann.

Ingemann is a family owned and managed supplier of fine cocoa from Nicaragua. They are already associated with around 800 farmers involved in the project.

Centro Humboldt will carry out climatic interpretations and develop specific recommendations for cocoa and honey crops, to help farmers build their resilience to climate change and increase their yields.

Our approach

Adapta Nicaragua provides a variety of solutions to the climatic challenges facing some of the most marginalised producers, which prevent their economic growth.

We help cocoa and honey producers become more resilient to unpredictable weather and increase the productivity of their crops, leading to greater potential for investment in this impoverished region.

Climate change agenda

The project contributes to the climate change adaptation agenda by testing innovative business models and information technologies for efficient use of water - such as water harvesting and recycling.

The project also aligns with the Inter-American Development Bank's plan for Nicaragua, which aims to support small producers to adopt innovative technologies that generate income but are also environmentally sustainable.
