Dhaka Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness project (DEEP)
The DEEP project is a consortium initiative of German Red Cross, Christian Aid, abd Action Contre La Faim (ACF). It is implemented through the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), with technical support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society (IFRC) and American Red Cross.
This project works in 15 wards of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), aiming to:
- enhance institutional preparedness;
- raise knowledge of earthquake risk and coordination;
- and increase the engagement of schools and community associations.
The project is funded by the European Commission - Directorate General - Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection- ECHO. The total value of the project is € 1,111,956.84.

Our approach
The DEEP project has created a culture of preparedness among the targeted stakeholders and ensured last-mile-connectivity at the targeted 15 wards by engaging key-stakeholders namely the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDRM), Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), Ministry of Health and Child Welfare (MoH&CW), Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), Ward Disaster Management Committee (WDMC) Urban and Red Cross Yellow (RCY) Volunteers.
Results
- Key actors Ward Disaster Management Committee, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Bangladesh Fire Service & Civil Defense (FS&CD) have improved knowledge, tools, processes and structures for preparedness and response.
- The knowledge of earthquake risk and the effectiveness of response coordination has improved among key actors and the target population.
- The extent to which community associations and schools promote earthquake preparedness in an effective and sustainable manner has increased.
