DRaSS is a 12-month disaster risk reduction and social protection project funded by the European Commission's Civil protection and Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) and jointly implemented by Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI) and Christian Aid.
DRaSS will strengthen social protection mechanisms and early warning and early action for vulnerable and disaster-affected groups, improving preparation and response to disasters by communities, government and other stakeholders.
Aims
The project is in response to some identified issues in disaster risk management in the target locations:
1. Critical gaps in state disaster response, particularly for flooding hazards.
2. Poor coverage of social protection systems
3. Critical gaps in the integration of social protection programmes with climate risk management systems.
It is being implemented in 8 communities across 4 Local Government Areas (LGA) in Kaduna and Sokoto States, Nigeria.
Key information
Kaduna: Jema’a LGA (Maigizo and Kafanchan communities) and Kaura LGA (Biniki and Bondong communities)
Sokoto: Goronyo LGA (Goronyo and Kwakwazo communities) and Rabah LGA (Rara and Gandi communities)
July 2021 - June 2022

20,000 people across 4 rural and flood prone communities in each state.

Our approach
We will we save lives and livelihoods of people by:
- Improving community and government’s preparation against disaster – timeliness, quality of risk information and response actions at ward, local, state and federal levels.
- Strengthening social protection systems to anticipate and absorb climate-related risks and shocks - link vulnerable people to early warning systems and contingency mechanisms that will help protect them from the impacts of climate disasters.
Results
At the end of the project the results will be:
- Development of Early Warning Systems: We aim to set up context specific, natural disaster focused Early Warning Systems and improve the capacity of stakeholders to effectively manage the system.
- Preparedness to strengthen response capacity: We will support the design and strengthen climate smart social protection systems. We will also improve coordination and timely decision making at ward/local/state/federal level for early actions and emergency response.
