Sabbath

Something to read

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High, to declare your steadfast love in the morning and your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy.

- Psalm 92:1-4.

Something to think about

Psalm 92 is known as a Song for the Sabbath Day.

Is Sunday a day of relaxation and rejoicing for you? Do you look forward to Sundays after a tough week?

Perhaps your experience of Sundays is a bit like that of the Psalmist – as you have an opportunity to rest, you are glad and joyful when you think back on the ways that God has helped you and used you in the past week.

But maybe you are not in a position to easily rest or sing a song for the Sabbath, due to caring responsibilities, work, or other pressures.

Where can we find Sabbath space to breathe and be with God? How can we open up space for others to sing? Christian Aid seeks an end to poverty across the world so that essential rest, lifegiving joy and spirit-lifting singing are possibilities for all people.

Something to pray

Loving God in heaven,
thank you for the many wonderful ways
that you are working through your people on earth.

Help me to be aware of your faithfulness,
and to always respond to you with thanksgiving.

Help me to find Sabbath space to praise and rejoice in your goodness.

May our world be one in which opportunities to rest and to sing with gladness are open to all people.

In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
